The Apothecary's Secret by Johanna Geiges is a free NetGalley ebook in early May.
Unbeknowst to me, this book takes place in the early Middle Ages (1200s) with a woman passing as a man in a monastery to learn a trade as an apothecary. Beyond encountering discrimination and madcap adventures & intrigue, the main character finds self-realization, yet I as a reader am left far behind.
Medicine in the Dark Ages was archaic and often did more harm than good. Anna, however, has a natural talent for healing, using plants and herbs to cure the sick. Jewish Medicus Aaron takes the young woman on as an apprentice, but it is the master who learns from the student. As word of Anna’s abilities to heal the sick spread, many come to her for help, but others see her ability as a sign of something darker. The Archbishop of Cologne publicly brands her as a witch, as good as a death sentence, but Anna will not give up saving lives, leading to an inevitable showdown. This is the type of story that played out thousands of times during the Dark Ages, when women gifted at healing were burned at the stake for witchcraft. Rich in historical detail
