Kyle Tait, having survived the harrowing, cross-country journey home to his family, must now struggle for existence in a post-EMP world that no one could have imagined just three short months prior. Each day brings new challenges – how to fight the bitter cold, where to scavenge food for the table, how to best fend off intruders and keep their community safe. As the cold, dark days of winter begin the slow transition to spring, the Tait family is faced with a challenge that dwarves all others and threatens to shatter their already precarious grip on sanity. Kyle and Jennifer are once again forced to endure a trial that threatens the survival of each member of their family. Follow Kyle, Jennifer, and the citizens of Deer Creek, MT as they plumb the depths of their resourcefulness, strength, endurance, and humanity while struggling together to survive the daunting days of winter. Written with the same thread of hope and optimism that seasoned the account of Kyle’s epic journey home, Daunting Days of Winter is Ray Gorham’s long-awaited sequel to his best seller, 77 Days in September.

I think that if I had read this book first I would not have been as interested in the series, but I read the "77 Days in September" first and couldn't wait to find out what happened after Kyle got home. Writing a sequel that was just as good as the first book had to be tough and I didn't think it was as good, however, if another book in this series comes along I would definitely read it. I have to say that I love the writer's style and it is a pleasure to read a book about events such as the one in the book without reading pages and pages of info on what type of guns everyone has and all the ammo that they use in those guns and what kind of range the guns have and what type of sites (spelling?) the guns have etc. I have two guns myself and my husband hunts and has guns so I am not anti-gun but enough is enough. This author puts the focus on the people and their feelings and reactions. Not everyone is good and not everyone is evil. The events in this sequel were sometimes a little hard to imagine as believable. Kyle should be nominated for sainthood....no grudges and eternal patience. It is nice to think that a community could pull together under the kind of stress that this community faces. I live in a small, rural town and no one can agree on something a simple as a leash law for dogs but I would like to believe that communities can come together in emergencies. The ending was an interesting twist and now what happens?Product details

Daunting Days of Winter eBook Ray Gorham Jodi Gorham Reviews
This book is an amazing sequel to 77 Days in September, which is a really good book if you haven't read it yet. I would highly recommend both of these books to anyone who enjoys postapoc books. Sequels frequently don't have all of the character development and/or plot development that went into the original book in a series, but Daunting Days of Winter is as good as, or maybe even better than 77 Days in September. The more emotional scenes with Kyle and Jennifer are really well done. Powerful, actually. Ray pulls you in to these books, so that any emotional scenes really draw out your emotions as you read them. These books are definitely worth getting.
...and I have read a lot of the post-apocalypse genre. Very realistic and intelligently written, with some passages you have to steel yourself to get through, and others in which you breathe a sigh of relief. Yet nothing is exploited for it's shock value. It's real, and the author has a well-rounded understanding of human nature, both of the decent kind and of the evil kind, and the skill to articulate both in a way that is both plausible and not exploitive. This story, and the first book in the series, have helped me acquire what I believe to be a more realistic view of
the human realities after a near extinction event It won't be an entirely dog-eat-dog society unless that's the attitude you take into it. Anyone who views it as such will likely not survive very long. In the final analysis, being part of something bigger than yourself is what not only makes survival possible, it is what makes it worthwhile.
Nicely written sequel to the well done "77 Days of September", this story has some holes for sure but makes for an interesting read. I did find the reason for Kyle's trip to more than a bit contrived, and the mystery really wasn't one at all. On the other hand, the reappearance of an old friend was a welcomed one. Ty was a great character as well and plays a nice role in the story. Personally, I thought the community situation seems a little too prosperous given the state of the world but I guess the author didn't want to write a book too gloomy for people to read. All in all, a pretty good effort. I would give three and a half stars but had to round up since this is better than a three star story.
SPOILER ALERT
I really enjoyed reading Rose's journey but once she got to the community, she seemed to disappear until the end of the book. Nothing is really shown of Kyle's reunion with her and it was like the author left out a chapter or two there.
I expected this to be about how the community survived the winter, but there was very little or nothing about that. It was all the usual about the bandits they had to fight and difficulties traveling. How did the community members without wood stoves get heat for the winter? We don't know. What did they do to store food for the winter and how was it distributed fairly so they could all eat? We don't know. What did they do to live off the land? Did they have working stoves to cook with? Did they learn to make such things as acorn bread or build hornos to bake it with? Did they barter with each other for their needs? We don't know. The book was written about their defense system, not about day to day living and the extensive organization they had to do to keep the community alive for the winter. Very disappointed. I recommend "Alas, Babylon" for better information of how they solved every day problems. I do think Mr. Gorham is a good writer, but maybe he doesn't know enough about this topic to write about it, so he doesn't. The expectation from the title was that he would.
While I greatly enjoyed and highly recommended the first book I found this one even better. If I remember correctly the first book was the authors first attempt at writings book and it was a commendable effort and well worth the read. Even though I'd highly recommend that you read the first book before reading this one, this book could be read by itself and enjoyed. It is obvious from this book that the writers craft is evolving into something very special to enjoy, if there's a book number three I will be buying it. Enjoy the read.
