SUCH a huge let down that the first picture shown for this book is not the actual cover of the product sold. I read these books (and all books by Loius Sachar) as a kid and just ate up the wacky stories. The illustrations from the original book are just as nostalgic to me as the words. I didn't click through the pictures of the cover before I bought it so I guess it's my fault, but I mean, come on, don't put a picture of the original book as the cover picture for the product if that's not what the customer is getting. SO bummed that my daughter won't get to read this awesome book with the same illustrations as I did. Instead she has to look at these stupid, cartoony ones that neuter the eeriness and excitement of the book. Do yourself a favor, if you're a Louis Sachar fan from when you read these stories as a child, track down one with the original drawings!Tags : Amazon.com: Wayside School Is Falling Down (9780380754847): Louis Sachar, Adam McCauley: Books,Louis Sachar, Adam McCauley,Wayside School Is Falling Down,HarperCollins,0380754843,Humorous stories,Humorous stories.,School stories.,Schools,Schools - Fiction,Schools;Fiction.,Show-and-tell presentations - Fiction,Children's Teenage fiction & true stories,Children's BooksAges 9-12 Fiction,Children: Grades 4-6,Fiction,General fiction (Children's Teenage),JUVENILE,JUVENILE FICTION Classics,JUVENILE FICTION Humorous Stories,JUVENILE FICTION School & Education,Juvenile Fiction,Juvenile FictionReaders - Chapter Books,Juvenile FictionSchool & Education,Juvenile Grades 4-6 Ages 9-11,Readers - Chapter Books,School & Education, middle grade humor; middle grade magical realism; middle grade fantasy; First day of school book; first day book; starting school book; beginning of the year book; beginning school book; first week of school; books for new students; school stories; school books; fall books for kids; September books for kids; funny; books for kids age 9 12; funny books; books for boys age 9 12; books for boys; childrens books by age 9 to 12 best sellers; kids books ages 9-12; wayside school series; book series; boys books for ages 9-12
Wayside School Is Falling Down Louis Sachar Adam McCauley Books Reviews
I can remember my 5th grade teacher reading this book to us. I have so many fond memories of the books she read and this was one of my very favs. I purchased this for my daughter to have one day when she's older. Although the pics and cover have changed from when I was in 5th grade, it's still as wonderful of a book as ever. Love it! If you haven't read it... do!
These were recommended by a friend for my daughter. She was having problems finding books she enjoyed as my daughter has a funny bone and found most books too boring. Well these fit the bill! She reads them over and over and finds them hilarious. There's a Christmas book as well that I read and it too was cheeky and funny.
I read this book in elementary and bought this for my 7 year old for his first chapter book. He has not put it down. All time childhood favorite . The cover is completely different
My 4th grader enjoyed reading this, and even reading it aloud to her younger siblings. It's her 3rd Wayside School series book, and she said it was just as good as the other two she's read. It's a bunch of short stories split into chapters, all loosely connected by main subject - the teachers and students of crazy, wacky Wayside School. Her favorite chapters were 8 The Best Part (about a student who is always in trouble) and 23 Teeth (about a student worrying about if people will still think she is cute after her new front teeth grow in). Innocent and imaginative stories.
This is one of my daughter's favorite series, and I have to say my daughter has good taste and a good sense of humor.
While some of us may have had that excellent education that all of our parents strive for, a few of us (probably more than just a few) have managed to squeek by and perhaps even learn something, even though the school may have been something more like Wayside School.
The stories in this book always have interesting things. The teachers are often as quirky as the kids, in fact usually more so.
The perpetual presense of lunch room food, that later in life joins us in work cafeterias and the infamous hospital food. The teachers who probably should have retired long before they reached retirement age, the principles who have been too affected by too many visits from kids to their offices for bad behavior. The other school staff who are always an interesting addition to the environment, are all here and tastefully, or more accurately described in the humor of reality. The kids are hillarious as well as some of the school rules.
We all know some of those rules that we have always wondered, why? They serve no purpose other than elementary school, and you never will encounter them again in life, unless of course you do military time. This book is just one of the series and they'll all be as enjoyable to read as they are to your child to read or be read to.
Some parents may think them irreverent, but lighten up and enjoy a little humor! Kids need humor too!
Not as shown. We specifically wanted this book with the original cover as shown in the image. The content itself is excellent, we love Louis Sachar books.
This book is absolutely brilliant. Louis Sachar is a comic genius, an irrepressible madman whose humor defies gravity and the laws of physics -- especially in the Wayside series where the school was accidentally built sideways and is missing the nineteenth floor. Kids read the blackboard upside-down, students eat pencils, cows clog the stairwells and there are 3 chapter nineteens and one chapter twenty, twenty-one and twenty-two. My daughter is six and read this book in a week. She was so enamored with it she actually abandoned her favorite television show in order to find out what happened when some hapless kid ate Miss Mush's Mushroom surprise.
Another wonderful thing about this series is that it's pleasurable for adults to read as well. Louis Sachar's humor is zany but dry -- imagine a child friendly Being John Malcovich or Big Leboswki. If Sachar was a cartoonist he'd be Gary Larson. If he was an actor he'd be Kramer in Seinfeld.
If your child is reluctant to read or doesn't enjoy reading please order the Wayside series. (The first book, 'Sideways Stories from Wayside School' is outstanding as well and it introduces you to all the madcap characters who reappear in this one.) If your child is grumpy and sullen you are almost guaranteed to make them chuckle, hoot and holler with these deliriously imaginative and insanely amusing books.
